Man in U.S. arrested for being naked in his own home.

This story is just too bizarre, and yet, the U.S. is becoming more bizarre by the second so I guess it should come as no surprise that a man is arrested in his own home for being naked.

This story could serve as a good cross-cultural discussion topic. I have no doubt that students from other countries would find it very hard to understand this story. After all, the U.S. is the home of the free, right?

Eric Williamson, from Springfield, Virginia, was brewing coffee in his kitchen when a woman and a seven-year-old boy walked past the window and saw him.

The woman complained to police who arrested Williamson shortly after the incident on Monday morning.

Williamson, 29, insisted he did nothing wrong and that any exposure of his private parts were accidental.

“Yes I wasn’t wearing any clothes but I was alone, in my own home and just got out of bed. It was dark and I had no idea anyone was outside looking in at me,” he said.

Williamson, who has a five-year-old daughter, added: “I am a loving dad. Any of my friends and anyone knows that and there is not a chance on this planet I would ever, ever, ever do anything like that to a kid.”

“I never had a conversation with anyone, never saw anyone. Didn’t cross my mind, came and got coffee. I mean if I stood and seemed comfortable in my kitchen possibly it’s natural. It’s my kitchen,” he insisted.

A spokesman for Fairfax county police, Mary Ann Jennings, said Williamson was arrested because officers believed he wanted to be seen naked by the public.

The 29-year-old faces up to a year in jail and a $2,000 fine if he is convicted. He is fighting the charge and seeking damages from police.

Yes, it’s unbelievable. I think the following editorial sums up my feelings adequately:

Naked Coffee Drinker Arrested in a World Gone Mad

By Ian Brockwell

A man from Springfield, Virginia (Eric Williamson, 29) was making some coffee in his kitchen whilst naked, and faces a possible charge of indecent exposure and a year in prison.

It was 5:30am and he had the house to himself. He decided to go into the kitchen to make a coffee. Like many other millions on the planet, he felt there was nothing wrong in being naked in his own house, especially at that time of the day.

Mr. Williamson claims that he did not purposely intend to expose himself to anyone outside of the house, but at that moment a woman and her seven-year-old son happened to pass by his kitchen window.

After seeing Mr. Williamson’s naked body, she called the police!

What many reports have failed to mention, is that the woman was in a hurry and cut across Mr. Williamson’s garden to save time. Apart from the fact that she was trespassing, why on earth was she out so early with her son?

Had she not taken the “short cut”, she probably would not have seen Mr. Williamson, and if she was in such a hurry, what was she doing looking in any windows at all?

It is uncertain whether such incidents truly shock members of the public in the US, but in Britain an event like this would produce little or no response, and certainly wouldn’t warrant a call to the police.

What can we expect next? Will burglars breaking into someone’s home be able to complain, if witnessing a married couple having sex? My God! Has the woman and her son never seen a naked man before?

Perhaps the police should charge the woman for trespassing, and if her son was traumatized in some way, blame her for that too (seeing as she took him in an area that she shouldn’t have done).

Maybe we should take this as a warning? Make sure you at least wear some pajamas in the future, because you never know when someone might see you through their telescope, penetrating the small gap you accidentally left in the curtains. Crazy!

    Hi Dan,

I am glad you picked up this story. I personally believe that this man was unjustly arrested. The sanctity of being able to do whatever we want in our own homes should be strongly protected.

Of course, if I were his neighbor I would appreciate him drawing the blinds, but I would understand if he forgot that detail every now and again. Who doesn’t?!
